US study finds only 60 per cent of ‘Molly’ pills contain MDMA

Anewstudyhasbeenpublishedinthe,withconcerningresultsaboutthepurityMolly,asupposedlypurerandsafersuccessortoEcstasywhichhasbecomepopularinAmerica.

Thestudyinvestigatesdatacollectedbynon-pritharmreductionorganisationDanceSafeacrossJuly2010toJuly2015.VolunteersforDanceSafeattendeddancemusiceventsacrossthecountryandtested529‘Molly’samples

MDMAwasonlypresentin60percentthesamplestested,withmostthepillsandpowdersincludingamixorassortedchemicals,tenunidentifiable.13samplescontainedmethamphetamine,andthehighlypotentanddangerousPMAwasfoundinthree.

Thestudyalsoundthat46percentpeoplesaidtheywouldstilltakethedrugafterdiscoveringitcontainedMDMA,comparedtoonly26percentafterdiscoveringtheirsamplecontainednotraceMDMA.Thefindingswillstrengthenthecaseharmreductiongroupsasthedebateovertheethicsdrugtesting,andwhetheritencouragesordiscouragesdrugtaking,rageson.

TheUK’spositiondrugtestinghasbecomemorefavourableinrecentyears,withsignedupfordrugstestingthissummer,andgroupslikedoingimportantworkinthefield.

Speakingaboutthematter,MatthewW.Johnson,aco-authortheJoPstudy,said:"Peoplewouldbesafestnottakinganystreetdrugsatall,butiffree,no-faulttestingcanreducedeathsandothercatastrophicconsequences,itmaybeaserviceworthhaving.”
