There are “DJs,” and then there is Marea Vierge-Noire, aka –a DJ’s DJ. It has almost become laborious to list all her achievements; The Black Madonna currently holds the No. 10 spot on Resident Advisor’s “,” as well as Mixmag’s “” and it’s not hard to see why. Her diversity in music during a set is swift and unparalleled. A disco track may quickly turn into something with a techno groove, while quickly traversing back to a Villalobos-type tech house beat.
The Chicago-based DJ also brings a wonderful personality to her sets. There are no deadpan expressions when the beat drops. She plays the music she would dance to, and dance she does.
Before her explosive touring, The Black Madonna was the talent buyer and resident DJ for Chicago’s legendary institution Smart Bar. Her avant-garde style has continued to make Smart Bar thrive as it nears its 30-year mark.
In addition to DJing, talent buying, and tearing down the politics dance music, Noire is a stupendous producer, having both original tracks and remixes under her belt like the highly sought-after Lady Sorrows EP Argot Records.
Her anti-establishment personality, combined with bass-driven disco sets, seems unanimous with the III Points philosophy.
Marea Vierge-Noire :
“Dance music needs riot grrrls. Dance music needs Patti Smith. It needs DJ Sprinkles. Dance music needs some discomfort with its euphoria. Dance music needs salt in its wounds. Dance music needs women over the age 40. Dance needs breastfeeding DJs trying to get their kids to sleep before they have to play. Dance needs cranky queers and teenagers who are really tired this shit. Dance music needs writers and critics and academics and historians. Dance music needs poor people and people who don’t have the right shoes to get into the club. Dance music needs shirts without collars. Dance music needs people who struggled all week. Dance music needs people that had to come before midnight because they couldn’t afford full admission. Dance music does not need more the status quo.”
The Black Madonna plays Friday, October 13th, at III Points Miami. Tickets and day passes are available .
