David Bowie inspired the LCD Soundsystem reformation

InanewinterviewwithLaurenLaverneon6Music,JamesMurphy,whoworkedcloselywithBowietowardstheendhislifeincludingplayingpercussiononhisfinalalbum‘Blackstar’,hasrevealedhowhismindwasmadeuptoreuniteLCDSoundsystemfollowingaconversationwiththe‘ZiggyStardust’singer.

Recallingtheconversation,Murphysaid:“IspentagoodamounttimewithDavidBowie,andIwastalkingaboutgettingthebandbacktogether.Hesaid‘doesitmakeyouuncomfortable?’Isaid‘yeah’,andhesaid‘good,itshould,youshouldbeuncomfortable’.

“Thefirstthingthatpoppedintomyheadwas‘whatdoyouknow?Youdon’tknowwhatit’sliketobeuncomfortable’.IwasimaginingthatifIwasDavidBowie,I’djustbewalkingaroundflippingeverybodyf–unlessmaybeLouReedisthere.Thereareliterallyoneortwopeoplewherenothingcanbesaidaboutthem.Butthat’snotwhohewaseverinhislife,hewasalwaysmakinghimselfuncomfortable.Therewassuchagreatfeeling‘youjustdon’tknowwhatyouaretoanybodyelse’.”

MurphyalsorevealedthathehaddiscussedmakinganalbumtogetherwithBowiepriortothelateartist’sdeath,andthatheshiedawayfromco-producing‘Blackstar’withTonyViscontobecausehe“gotoverwhelmed”bythethoughttakingontheroleanddidn’tthinkhe“belonged”atthecontrolsinthatsituation.
